FORGIVENESS AND RACE

forgiveness is a tricky thing.

I see the stereotype of the loving oppressed Black person  as a person co opted by racism and white supremacy.

in the political theater of history it has been the duty of the oppressed to forgive the oppressor, to avoid greater oppression, or to earn the privilege of less oppression without fear of retaliation.

Yes, on a metaphysical level, forgiveness frees me from the hate and anger and hurt of the wrong done to me,

but in history and literature the forgiveness of the wronged Black is given to the oppressive white without atonement or supplication.

and in this type of situation it supports the notion of most white americans that Black people really dont feel pain, hurt etc.

On 9/11 America vowed NEVER AGAIN.

Richard Gere was booed for suggesting we work toward forgiveness.

The forgiveness of the oppressed is a necessary part of the oppressors daydream, suggesting that it will never become a nightmare.

The oppressor fears, perhaps knows, that he cant withstand a portion of what the oppressed have endured and that twice of what the oppressed have endured are due as his punishment.

It is as much the fear of retaliation as it is of a level playing field.

And this is why people freak when called on racism.

And this is why people freak when called on racism.

I am a good person
racists are bad people
I am not a racist

because

IF you believe that the playing field is level and/ or
that God is just and merciful

THEN oppressed people in some way deserve being oppressed.

THEN you are not a bad person for oppressing these people
you certainly aren’t a bad person from benefiting from the oppression of these people by others.
and

THEN you are still a good person when you silently ignore the needs and pleas of the oppressed.
